SCAM ALERT – Oklahoma Guardsmen identities stolen

In recent months, a number of Internet scams have been initiated using Oklahoma National Guardsmen’s names and photographs. Most of the names and photos were copied from facebook and other social network sites (SNS). The scammers have posed as Guardsmen and asked for financial assistance.
The Oklahoma National Guard’s Office of Public Affairs would like to remind our followers that every piece of information and every photo you post on your facebook page, or other SNS, can be used by identity thieves to scam your friends, family and members of the general public. Please take the time to review your security settings on all of your SNS pages and set them to maximum protection. You should only be sharing your pages with people you actually know and not even “friends of friends”.
If you see any Internet based request for financial assistance by a current or former member of the armed forces, you should vet it carefully before making contact with the requester. If the request is coming from a member of the Oklahoma National Guard, please forward all information to the Oklahoma National Guard’s Office of Public Affairs and they will vet the request and ensure that it is legitimate. If you have any questions or comments, please contact us through our facebook page (www.facebook.com/oklahomanationalguard) or by phone at (405) 228-5212.
